How Much Wallpaper Do You Really Need?
Ordering the right amount of wallpaper can feel confusing. Between wall measurements, roll sizes, and design repeats, it’s easy to order too little, or too much. This guide walks you through the key steps to measure, calculate, and plan your wallpaper order, so you can feel confident in getting the right amount for your project.

How to Measure Your Walls for Wallpaper
Height: Measure from floor to ceiling in feet, no need to include baseboards in your measurement but do include doors & windows.
Minimum: 1 ft
Maximum: 12 ft for DIY wallpapers (Peel & Stick, Pre-Pasted)
Up to 27 ft for Commercial wallpapers
Width: Measure the width of each wall in feet and add them together.
Add as many wall widths as you need.
At least one wall width is required.
Add 10% extra for safety/overage (optional).
Pro Tip: Always measure in multiple spots and use the largest height and width for accuracy.
How many rolls of wallpaper do I need
Spoonflower wallpaper comes in standard roll lengths:
DIY wallpapers (Peel & Stick, Pre-Pasted): 1 ft (sample), 3 ft, 6 ft, 9 ft, 12 ft
Commercial wallpapers: 1 ft (sample), 3 ft, 6 ft, 9 ft, 12 ft, plus an additional 27 ft
How it works:
Take your wall height.
Round up to the nearest available roll length.
Example: Wall height = 8.5 ft → 9 ft roll.
Example: Wall height = 4 ft → 6 ft roll.
How to measure for wallpaper with a repeat
Some wallpaper designs include repeats that affect the calculation:
Straight repeat: No extra adjustment needed.
Half-drop repeat (less than 24 inches wide): No extra adjustment needed.
Half-drop repeat (24 inches wide):
Divide vertical repeat in half → offset.
Add offset to wall height → round up to roll length.
Example: Wall height = 6 ft; vertical repeat = 24 in → offset = 12 in (1 ft). Total = 7 ft → round up = 9 ft roll.

Calculate Quantity (Number of Rolls or Panels)
Once you know your wall height and roll length, the next step is to figure out how many panels you’ll need to cover the total wall width.
Panel width = 24 inches (2 ft).
To find the quantity you'll need:
Sum all of your wall widths.
Divide by 2.
Round up to nearest whole number.
Example: Total wall width = 23 ft → 23 ÷ 2 = 11.5 → 12 panels.
Adding an optional 10% overage, may increase the number of panels needed.
